What happened in Ukraine on 3 May 2022?

Summary
A look back at a day of shelling in Donetsk Oblast, evacuations from Azovstal and a Kremlin message to Paris.
What did the war look like on 3 May 2022? It was a day of continued shelling in the east, a limited evacuation effort in besieged Mariupol and a diplomatic signal from Moscow.
In Donetsk Oblast, projectiles hit a coking plant in Avdiivka and killed ten people. Pavlo Kyrylenko, Governor of Donetsk Oblast, said separately that nine people had been killed by Russian shelling in the region.
In Mariupol, the United Nations said 127 people had been evacuated from the besieged Azovstal plant and nearby areas. The announcement followed a difficult 2 May. Civilian evacuations from the steel mill, expected to resume at 8 a.m. local time that day, did not take place. Russia began a non-stop barrage of airstrikes and bombings after Red Cross personnel left. They had departed the previous day, once the evacuations were suspended. Also on 2 May, five Russian troops were allegedly killed during a supposed incursion into the steel plant.
Talks and signals
On 3 May 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin told French President Emmanuel Macron that Russia was ready to continue peace negotiations with Ukraine. The message came amid fears that talks between the two countries had stalled.
A separate row had opened on 2 May. Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, accused Hungary of having advance knowledge of the Russian invasion. He said Putin had warned Hungary and that Hungary had plans to annex parts of Western Ukraine.
Fighting elsewhere
The preceding days showed fighting across a wide area. On 2 May, a Russian missile hit a dormitory in Odesa, according to Ukrainian officials. It killed a 14-year-old boy and wounded a 17-year-old girl. An Orthodox church was also damaged.
The same day, a Ukrainian Air Force Bayraktar TB2 drone destroyed two Russian Raptor-class patrol boats near Snake Island in the Black Sea. Explosions were reported in the Russian city of Belgorod, where Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said there were no casualties or damage.
On 1 May, Russian artillery fire near Izium in Kharkiv Oblast killed three people and wounded eight, according to the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Synyehubov. Russian forces were trying to advance towards the settlements of Udy, Prudianka and Staryi Saltiv. The same day, May Day anti-war rallies were held around the world to call for peace in Ukraine.
