What did Russia's strikes on Kyiv hit on 28 September?

Summary

A retrospective on Russian drone attacks that killed at least three people in the Ukrainian capital and prompted Poland to scramble jets.

What did the Russian strikes on Kyiv on 28 September 2026 actually hit? According to reports at the time, drones struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine building, a health clinic and a residential building in the capital. At least three people were killed and 24 others were injured.

Among the injured was Volodymyr Horbulin, the former secretary of the National Security and Defence Council.

Poland reacts

The attacks had an effect beyond Ukraine's borders. Polish military jets were scrambled in response to the Russian airstrikes on Ukraine. In Lublin Voivodeship, people were briefly urged to seek shelter before the alert was lifted.

A second day of strikes on the capital

The attack on 28 September followed a day of heavy exchanges. On 27 September, Russian strikes hit Kyivstar's headquarters and several data centres in Kyiv. One facility was struck twice, and two children and an adult were injured. Russia said it had also targeted a Vodafone Ukraine data centre.

On the same day, Russian and Ukrainian forces traded strikes that killed at least eight people in Ukraine and one in Russia. The targets included Kyiv and its outskirts, the Kharkiv and Odesa Oblasts, Sumy and Russian-occupied Enerhodar in Ukraine, as well as Russia's Belgorod Oblast.

Kyiv, a city of around 2,950,000 residents, has been frequently targeted by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022.
