What did Washington's $40 billion Ukraine package contain?

Summary

A look back at the US aid law signed days before 24 May 2022, and the Senate vote that sent it to the president.

What had Washington committed to Ukraine by 24 May 2022? The answer was a $40 billion aid package that had just cleared the US Congress and become law.

On 19 May 2022, the United States Senate voted 86–11 to pass the package, sending the legislation to President Joe Biden for his signature. He signed it into law on 21 May 2022.

The law provided military and economic aid for Ukraine. It also covered the replenishment of US equipment stocks that had been sent to Ukraine, funded operations of the US European Command, and addressed the global food crisis.

The sequence was short: a lopsided Senate vote on 19 May, followed two days later by the president's signature. By 24 May 2022, the funding was in place as law.
