Kharkiv breakthrough: what was known by 8 September 2022

Summary

A look back at the reports of Ukrainian advances in Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts, and at protests in Prague, in the days before the covered date.

What did the front line look like on 8 September 2022? Reports from the preceding days pointed to Ukrainian gains in two regions, while a protest in Central Europe showed pressure over energy prices.

On 7 September 2022, Ukrainian forces were reported to have broken through Russian defences in Kharkiv Oblast as part of a renewed counter-offensive in the region. They reportedly advanced more than 30 kilometres into Russian-held territory and captured many towns and cities, including Balakliia.

Kherson Oblast

In the south, Ukrainian forces recaptured the town of Vysokopillia in Kherson Oblast on 4 September 2022. The town had been under Russian occupation since March. Ukrainian forces raised the national flag over its hospital.

Protest in Prague

Away from the fighting, an estimated 70,000 people marched in Prague on 3 September 2022. They demanded that the Czech government do more to control soaring energy prices and voiced opposition to the country's involvement in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Political groups including the Communist Party organised the demonstration.

Taken together, the reports from 3 to 7 September 2022 described Ukrainian forces advancing in the north-east and the south, and public anger over energy costs in the Czech capital.
