Kharkiv breakthrough: what was known by 8 September 2022

Summary
A look back at reports of Ukrainian advances in Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts, and a mass protest in Prague, in the days before 8 September 2022.
What did the front line look like on 8 September 2022? Reports from the preceding days pointed to Ukrainian forces gaining ground in two regions, while political pressure over the war's economic effects was visible in Prague.
Advance in Kharkiv Oblast
As reported on 7 September 2022, Ukrainian forces were said to have broken through Russian defences in Kharkiv Oblast as part of a renewed counter-offensive. They reportedly advanced more than 30 kilometres into Russian-held territory and captured a number of towns and cities, including Balakliia.
Recapture in Kherson Oblast
A few days earlier, on 4 September 2022, Ukrainian forces recaptured the town of Vysokopillia in Kherson Oblast, which had been under Russian occupation since March. Ukrainian forces raised the national flag over the town's hospital.
Protest in Prague
On 3 September 2022, an estimated 70,000 people marched in Prague, the Czech capital. They demanded that the government do more to control soaring energy prices and voiced opposition to the country's involvement in the war. Political groups including the Communist Party organised the demonstration.
Taken together, the reports from 3 to 7 September 2022 show military momentum for Ukraine in the east and south, alongside public demonstrations over energy costs in a neighbouring country.
