What happened on the front on 30 January 2023?

Summary

A look back at the reports of fighting and shelling that preceded 30 January 2023, from Bakhmut's northern approaches to Kherson and Sumy Oblast.

What had the war looked like in the hours before 30 January 2023? Reports from the preceding two days, 28 and 29 January, described contested claims in the east and continued shelling of civilian areas in the south and north.

Claims near Bakhmut

On 29 January, forces of the Wagner Group said they had captured the village of Blahodatne, north of Bakhmut. Ukraine rejected the claim and said it had repelled the attack.

Shelling in Kherson

Also on 29 January, Russian forces shelled the city of Kherson. Three people were killed and six others injured. A hospital, a school and a bus station were damaged.

Sumy Oblast and Luhansk Oblast

On 28 January, the Russian Air Force carried out an airstrike on Seredyna-Buda in Sumy Oblast. A kindergarten was destroyed and nearby residential buildings were damaged. No casualties were reported. Cross-border shelling also damaged the towns of Esman and Shalyhyne.

The same day, Russia claimed that a Ukrainian HIMARS missile strike on a hospital in Novoaidar, Luhansk Oblast, had killed 14 people and injured 24 others, including patients and medical staff. That account came from the Russian side.

Taken together, the reports showed fighting along several parts of the front, with civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools and a kindergarten named among the damaged sites, and with the two sides offering competing accounts of events in the east.
