What happened after Zelensky stripped Medvedchuk of citizenship?

Summary

A look back at political developments reported in Ukraine and Armenia in the days before 12 January 2023.

What was the political picture on 12 January 2023? Two reported decisions from 10 January 2023 framed it: one in Kyiv and one in Yerevan.

Citizenship stripped in Kyiv

On 10 January 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky deprived the pro-Kremlin politician Viktor Medvedchuk of his citizenship. Three other people were included in the same decision. The charge cited was high treason.

The move was listed among government reactions to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Exercises postponed in Yerevan

The same day, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that joint military exercises with the Russian Armed Forces, planned under the Collective Security Treaty Organization, would be postponed for that year. He cited the organization's refusal to condemn Azerbaijan over the disputes, in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Two announcements, one region

The two announcements came from different governments and concerned different matters. Both, however, touched on relations with Russia: Kyiv acted against a politician described as pro-Kremlin, while Yerevan put off exercises with Russian forces within the security organization.
