Strikes around the Black Sea ports and Crimea

Summary

A look back at the attacks on Odesa shipping and a Crimean shipyard in the days before 10 November 2023.

What was happening along Ukraine's Black Sea coast in the days leading up to 10 November 2023? The preceding week brought attacks on both sides, centred on Odesa Oblast and occupied Crimea.

On 4 November 2023, Ukrainian forces struck the Zalyv Shipbuilding yard in Russian-occupied Kerch, Crimea, with cruise missiles. The strike damaged the Russian corvette Askold.

Two days later, on 6 November 2023, Russian forces attacked Odesa with drones and missiles. At least eight people were injured, and infrastructure was damaged, including the Odesa Fine Arts Museum.

On 8 November 2023, a Russian missile hit a Liberian-flagged vessel as it entered the Pivdennyi Port in Odesa Oblast. One crew member was killed and four others were injured. The ship was being used to transport iron ore to China.

Taken together, the reported incidents show military and commercial targets being hit around the Black Sea in the same week: a naval vessel in a Crimean shipyard on one side, and a city, a museum and a merchant ship on the other.
