Russia's wanted list and a mass missile attack

Summary

A look back at 9 January 2024, when Russia named an exiled tycoon as wanted, a day after a large-scale strike on Ukraine.

What happened on 9 January 2024, and what had come just before it? Russia placed exiled tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky on a wanted list over comments he had made about the war.

The move came a day after Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack across Ukraine on 8 January 2024. The strikes killed at least four people and injured 38 others in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.

Ukraine said it shot down all eight drones launched in the attack, along with 18 of the 51 missiles.

The two developments, one legal and one military, showed the war being pursued on different fronts: in the air over Ukrainian cities and regions, and against critics of the war abroad.
