Denmark and Spain widen support for Ukraine

Summary

A look back at two pledges of military backing announced in the final days of May 2024, as seen from 1 June 2024.

What did Kyiv's partners promise in the days before 1 June 2024? Two announcements stood out, both tied to military aid during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On 27 May 2024, Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, signed a bilateral security pact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also pledged €1 billion (US$1.1 billion) of military aid to Ukraine.

Three days later, on 30 May 2024, Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said Denmark had approved Ukrainian airstrikes on Russian territory using Danish-supplied F-16 jets. The statement came amid the 2024 Kharkiv offensive.

Taken together, the two announcements showed partners adding to Ukraine's support in different forms: a formal security agreement with a financial commitment from Madrid, and a decision from Copenhagen on how aircraft it supplied could be used.
