What the days before 13 June 2023 showed

Summary
A look back at security developments reported between 8 and 10 June 2023, from Odesa to the Kakhovka dam aftermath.
What was the security picture in Ukraine on 13 June 2023? The reports from the preceding days pointed to strikes on cities, new Western aid and fighting in the south.
On 10 June 2023, Russian forces attacked Odesa with drones and missiles, killing three civilians and injuring 27 others, as reported at the time.
The same day, the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced a $500 million military aid package for Ukraine, including 288 AIM-7 missiles. He also announced a $10 million humanitarian package to help victims of the Kakhovka dam collapse.
The dam and its aftermath
The Kakhovka Dam was breached in the early hours of 6 June 2023, flooding the lower Dnipro river in Kherson Oblast. The dam was under the control of the Russian military, which had seized it in the early days of the invasion. Many experts concluded that Russian forces likely blew up a segment of it to hinder the planned Ukrainian counter-offensive. Ukraine specifically blamed Russia's 205th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, while Russian authorities denied the accusations.
Fighting in Zaporizhzhia Oblast
On 8 June 2023, the Russian Defence Ministry said it had destroyed several Ukrainian army tanks in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, including a Leopard 2 main battle tank. It described this as the first Western-made tank destroyed by Russian forces in the war. A video released by the ministry showed a column of tanks being hit in a field, with one confirmed as a Leopard 2.
Taken together, the reports from 6 to 10 June 2023 showed civilian casualties from air attacks, continued foreign military and humanitarian support, and active combat in the south in the days leading up to 13 June 2023.
