Drones over Moscow and Izmail: 2 August 2023

Summary
A look back at a day when drone strikes hit both the Danube grain port of Izmail and the skies around the Russian capital.
What did the war look like on 2 August 2023? It was a day of drones, with strikes on a Ukrainian river port and the aftermath of attacks near Moscow.
On 2 August 2023, a Russian drone strike hit Izmail in Odesa Oblast. It damaged administrative buildings and grain storage facilities in the city.
Moscow's airspace under pressure
The previous day, 1 August, Russia said it had destroyed three drones near Moscow. One of them damaged the 21st floor of the IQ-quarter mixed-use complex, which hosts offices for the Ministry of Economic Development. Vnukovo International Airport temporarily closed for the second time in two days.
The disruption reached beyond Russia's borders. On 1 August, Turkmenistan Airlines announced a temporary suspension of its flights from Ashgabat to Moscow following the drone attacks. Its flights would instead go to Kazan, in Tatarstan.
Aftermath of Kryvyi Rih
The strikes came just after a deadly attack on 31 July. A Russian ballistic missile hit an apartment complex and a university building in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. At least six civilians were killed and 75 others injured.
Taken together, the reports from 31 July to 2 August show strikes on Ukrainian civilian sites and infrastructure, alongside drone incidents around the Russian capital that disrupted air travel.
