What the 8 January 2024 strikes showed

Summary
A look back at a Russian missile and drone attack across several Ukrainian regions, and the air-defence figures that followed.
What did the Russian attack of 8 January 2024 reveal about the pressure on Ukraine's skies? Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack across the country, killing at least four people and injuring 38 others in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.
The interception figures were uneven. Ukraine said it shot down all eight drones, but only 18 of the 51 missiles. By that count, 33 missiles were not stopped.
The strike came two days after another deadly attack. On 6 January 2024, according to local authorities, Russian forces hit Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast with S-300 missiles, killing at least 11 people, including five children, and injuring eight others.
Taken together, the two days show attacks on different parts of the country, from Donetsk Oblast in the east to Khmelnytskyi Oblast in the west. The reported casualties were civilian, and the missile interception rate on 8 January 2024 was well below the drone rate.
