What the 8 January 2024 Russian strikes showed

Summary

A look back at a large missile and drone attack that hit four Ukrainian oblasts, and at the interception figures Ukraine reported.

What did the Russian strike of 8 January 2024 reveal about the air war? Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack across Ukraine, killing at least four people and injuring 38 others in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.

The interception figures were uneven. Ukraine said it shot down all eight drones but only 18 of the 51 missiles. On those numbers, roughly a third of the missiles were stopped, while the drones were all intercepted. The missiles accounted for most of the weapons launched, which is where the gap lay.

The attack came two days after local authorities reported a separate strike on Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast on 6 January 2024. Russian forces used S-300 missiles there, according to those authorities, killing at least 11 people, including five children, and injuring eight others.

Taken together, the two attacks, two days apart, hit civilians in several parts of Ukraine, from the Donetsk region to the oblasts struck on 8 January.
