What did Russia's 8 January 2024 barrage hit?

Summary

A look back at a large missile and drone attack that killed at least four people and injured 38 across four Ukrainian oblasts.

How heavy was the Russian assault on Ukraine on 8 January 2024? Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack across the country, killing at least four people and injuring 38 others in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.

Ukraine said its air defences shot down all eight drones launched. Of 51 missiles, Ukraine said it downed 18.

Days after a deadly strike in Donetsk Oblast

The attack came two days after Russian forces struck Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast on 6 January 2024. According to local authorities, S-300 missiles were used in that attack, which killed at least 11 people, including five children, and injured eight others.

Taken together, the two days of strikes showed continued Russian fire on Ukrainian territory at the start of 2024, with civilian casualties reported in both.
