What happened in Ukraine on 7 February 2024?

Summary

A retrospective on a wave of Russian missile and drone strikes, set against the preceding days of fighting and the EU's financial decision.

What did the war look like on 7 February 2024? On that date, Russian forces launched a wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, killing at least five civilians and injuring 11 others, including two in Kyiv.

The strikes

The attacks were directed against Ukrainian infrastructure and reached multiple parts of the country, including the capital. The casualty figures given at the time were five dead and 11 injured.

The days before

The strikes came after a week of exchanges on several fronts. On 1 February 2024, two French aid workers were killed in a Russian drone strike near Beryslav in Kherson Oblast, and four other people were injured. The same day, Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles sank the Tarantul-class missile corvette RFS Ivanovets in Donuzlav Bay.

On 3 February 2024, Ukrainian long-range drones attacked a Lukoil oil refinery in Volgograd Oblast, Russia, causing a large fire and disrupting operations. Governor Andrey Bocharov said the attack had been repelled by air defences. Also on 3 February, Russian-appointed local officials said at least 28 civilians were killed by Ukrainian shelling in Russian-occupied Lysychansk, Luhansk Oblast, and that ten others were rescued from rubble.

Financial backing

On 1 February 2024, the European Union formally approved a €50 billion support package for Ukraine after Hungary withdrew its veto. The package was expected to help the Ukrainian government cover some costs of pensions and salaries over four years, with the first funds due in March.
