Ukraine's election field narrows before March 2019 vote

Summary

Two candidates stepped aside in favour of Anatolii Hrytsenko, while Ukraine's Paralympians topped a world championship table.

What happened in Ukraine's presidential race in the days before 5 March 2019? The field of candidates shrank. On 1 March 2019, Andrii Sadovyi and Dmytro Hnap decided to withdraw from the election in favour of Anatolii Hrytsenko.

The move meant two names fewer on the list of those seeking the presidency, and it consolidated support behind Hrytsenko.

A sporting success

There was also good news for Ukrainian sport. The national Paralympic winter sports team finished first overall at the 2019 World Championships in Prince George, Canada, which ended on 27 February 2019. The team won 42 medals: 9 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze.
