What Zelenskyy said about North Korean troops

Summary

A look back at the claim of North Korean deployment and Poland's asylum request, which framed political debate around 14 October 2024.

What was the political picture on 14 October 2024? Two reports from the preceding days set the agenda for Ukraine and its neighbours.

On 13 October, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that North Korean troops had been deployed to Ukraine to fight alongside the Russian military. The claim concerned foreign involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine and was the most direct allegation of its kind in the reports from that weekend.

Poland's asylum request

On 12 October, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk asked the European Union to accept a provisional suspension of migrants' right to asylum, in order to control irregular immigration from Belarus. The request followed Germany's tightening of border controls and a call for EU-wide solutions from its Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser.

Human rights activists condemned Tusk's proposal as unconstitutional.

Taken together, the two reports showed attention on 14 October 2024 split between the war in Ukraine and pressure on the European Union's borders with Belarus.
