Vyshneve falls as Russia presses on Pokrovsk axis

Summary
A look back at the reported capture of a Donetsk Oblast settlement during the Pokrovsk offensive.
What did the reported fall of Vyshneve mean for the fighting around Pokrovsk? On 3 November 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Ukrainian military news site DeepStateUA both reported that Russia had captured the settlement in Donetsk Oblast.
The reports also said Russian troops were advancing towards Hryhorivka, to the west of Vyshneve. Both sources were reporting on the same development, which formed part of the Pokrovsk offensive.
The wider offensive
The Pokrovsk offensive was a Russian military operation whose primary goal was to capture the strategic cities of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in western Donetsk Oblast. Fighting had intensified after Russian forces advanced into Prohres and captured it on 18 and 19 July 2024. That marked a turning point for the Russian offensive northwest of Avdiivka, which Russia had captured in February 2024.
By early November 2024, combat had taken place in numerous settlements east and south of Pokrovsk in Pokrovsk Raion. Vyshneve was one more name on that list, and the reported advance towards Hryhorivka showed the direction of Russian movement at that point.
The setting
Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv, Ukraine's easternmost regions, had been a theatre of operations since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war in February 2022. The events of 3 November 2024 were part of that long-running eastern campaign.
