What did Kyiv and Warsaw face by 20 June 2024?

Summary

A look back at two reported developments in the days before 20 June 2024: a Russian ceasefire offer that Ukraine rejected, and a Polish demand for answers from Berlin.

What was on the regional political agenda by 20 June 2024? Two reports from the preceding days give part of the picture.

On 14 June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he was ready for a ceasefire on conditions. He said Ukraine would have to withdraw from territories Russia claimed, including areas Ukraine had liberated, and would have to abandon its accession to NATO. Ukraine rejected the offer.

Three days later, on 17 June 2024, a dispute surfaced between two neighbours. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk ordered Germany to explain a recorded incident in which German police appeared to abandon a migrant family at Osinów Dolny, in Poland, just east of the Germany–Poland border.

The two episodes were unrelated in substance. One concerned the terms on which the war in Ukraine might be paused, and the other a question of conduct between German and Polish authorities. Both were reported in the days leading up to 20 June 2024.
