What happened on 24 July 2026 along the front

Summary

A Romanian jet downed a Russian drone, Ukrainian drones hit warehouse hubs, and a missile strike near Kyiv killed 10.

What did 24 July 2026 show about the reach of the war? Across a single day, it touched a NATO member's airspace, Russian retail logistics and a defence-industry event in Kyiv Oblast.

Missile strike near Kyiv

Ukrainian officials said a Russian ballistic missile struck a private training ground in Kyiv Oblast that was hosting a defence-industry event. The attack killed 10 people and injured nearly 100. Prosecutors opened an investigation into possible negligence in how the event was organised.

Drones over Romania

On the same date, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a Russian Geran-2 drone near Padina, in Buzău County. The drone had entered Romanian airspace for the first time. Since Russia's full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, states near the conflict, particularly NATO members, have reported numerous airspace violations, most attributed to Russian equipment such as drones and aircraft.

Strikes on Wildberries hubs

Ukrainian drones also hit Wildberries logistics hubs. One in Russian-occupied Crimea was struck and caught fire. Others in Saint Petersburg and Tver, in Russia, were also hit. Russia has occupied Crimea since 2014, while Ukraine and most of the international community regard it as occupied Ukrainian territory.

The strikes belonged to a series of Ukrainian drone waves that began on 18 July 2026 against warehouses of Wildberries, a large online retailer in Russia that has aided the Russian war effort. Later, other retailers were also struck, including Lenta, and on 22 August 2026 the first attack on an Ozon warehouse took place in Chapayevsk, Samara Oblast.

A day of widening reach

Taken together, the events of 24 July 2026 spanned the Kyiv region, deep Russian logistics networks, occupied Crimea and Romanian skies.
