What the strikes of early October 2025 showed

Summary
A look back at reported attacks on both sides of the border in the days before 14 October 2025.
What did the war look like in the days leading up to 14 October 2025? Reports from 8 to 11 October described civilian harm on both sides of the border, in strikes that hit homes, a place of worship and civilian infrastructure.
On 8 October, a drone strike on a house in Sumy, in Sumy Oblast, injured a family, including a 4-year-old girl who was in critical condition. Dozens of civilian infrastructure facilities were also damaged. The strike was reported in the context of the 2025 Sumy offensive and Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
The same day, a Ukrainian missile strike on Maslova Pristan in Russia's Belgorod Oblast killed three people and injured nine. A search and rescue operation was under way for others believed to be trapped under rubble.
On 11 October, a Russian strike on a church in Kostiantynivka, in Donetsk Oblast, killed at least two people and injured four others, one of them critically.
What the pattern shows
Taken together, these reports show strikes reaching residential and civilian sites in three different regions within four days: Sumy and Donetsk oblasts in Ukraine, and Belgorod Oblast in Russia. The casualty figures were preliminary when reported, and rescue work in Maslova Pristan was still continuing.
