What happened in the war on 3 July 2026?

Summary
A look back at a day of mourning in Kyiv, a claimed Russian gain in Donetsk Oblast and Ukrainian strikes on Crimea.
What did the war look like on 3 July 2026? It was a day of mourning in Kyiv, fresh strikes across Ukraine and Ukrainian attacks on targets in occupied Crimea.
Ukraine declared the day of mourning for victims of the Russian bombardment of Kyiv on 2 July, as the death toll rose to 30. That attack, a major ballistic missile and drone assault, had injured 98 people and forced more than 50,000 civilians to shelter underground.
Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine on 3 July killed at least five people and injured ten others. Three of the victims were in Sumy, where a drone struck their apartment building.
On the eastern front, Russia reported that its forces had captured the city of Kostyantynivka in Donetsk Oblast.
Ukrainian forces, for their part, struck nine substations across Russian-occupied Crimea, causing power outages. They also targeted Saky air base and Gvardeyskoye air base, where seven jets were destroyed or damaged.
Two days earlier, on 1 July, Ukraine had approved a mechanism for exporting domestically produced weapons and military technologies. The aim was to raise funds for the defence effort and attract foreign investment, with the Ukrainian military's supply needs remaining the priority.
