Strikes and denials: the war on 6 July 2026

Summary

A retrospective on a day of deadly attacks on Kyiv Oblast, a reported Ukrainian drone strike deep in Siberia and a contested claim over Kostiantynivka.

What did the war look like on 6 July 2026? It was a day of strikes reaching in both directions, and of a dispute over who held a city in the Donetsk region.

The heaviest toll was in Kyiv Oblast. A Russian ballistic missile and drone attack killed at least 22 people and injured 56 others, as reported at the time. Search and rescue efforts were under way in Kyiv to free civilians trapped under rubble.

The same day, Ukraine's General Staff reported that drones had struck Russia's Omsk refinery in Omsk, in the Siberia region. Omsk is in Omsk Oblast, far from the front line. The report was part of a series of attacks inside Russia during the war.

A contested claim in Donetsk Oblast

On the ground, attention remained on Kostiantynivka in Donetsk Oblast. On 4 July 2026, Russia had claimed it captured the city the previous day. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces denied this. They said Ukrainian forces still controlled the city and were continuing defensive operations there.

The fight for Kostiantynivka is part of the wider Battle of Kostiantynivka, a military engagement between the Russian and Ukrainian armed forces for control of the city.

Taken together, the reports from 4 to 6 July 2026 show a war fought on several levels: missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian territory, drone strikes on Russian industrial sites, and a struggle over territory and its claimed control in the east.
