What happened in Kyiv politics on 19 August 2026?

Summary

A day of anti-corruption allegations, a new defence minister and a deadly strike on the capital.

What did 19 August 2026 mean for Ukraine's political landscape? It brought a corruption case touching the president's office, a confirmed defence minister and a deadly attack on the capital.

Anti-corruption operation

On 19 August 2026, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) announced an operation codenamed "Forest Gump". They said it exposed a criminal organisation that laundered 150m hryvnias in cash to post bail for former minister Herman Halushchenko in the "Midas" case.

According to the investigation, the scheme involved former and serving members of parliament and senior officials of the Office of the President. The named participants included Iryna Mudra, described as a lawyer, banker and deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. Also implicated was the leadership of the state-owned Sense Bank.

A new defence minister

The same day, the Verkhovna Rada gave its consent to the appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as defence minister.

Attack on Kyiv

The day also brought a Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky said it killed at least 15 people and injured 40 others. Residential buildings, a children's hospital and a school were damaged.

Support from London

The day before, on 18 August 2026, British prime minister Andy Burnham confirmed that the United Kingdom would continue to support Ukraine militarily. This followed a Russian warning that the UK would face "consequences" for allowing Ukraine to use British-made drones to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.

Background on the wider military aid picture, written later, notes that Russia has repeatedly threatened countries supplying Ukraine but has not followed through on those threats. It also records that by April 2025 Europe had overtaken the United States in total military aid to Ukraine, with €72bn allocated against €65bn.
