Moldova votes to leave the CIS

Summary

A look back at the Moldovan parliament's decision of 2 April 2026, and a Ukrainian government step on EU law a day earlier.

What did Moldova's parliament decide on 2 April 2026? It approved the country's withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The government said the CIS's core values and principles were no longer respected, among them territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders. It pointed to Russia's actions in the region, including the war against Ukraine and what it called an illegal military presence on Moldovan territory.

The vote sat alongside Moldova's course towards joining the European Union, a track that the reports of the day linked to the decision.

Kyiv's EU track

On 1 April 2026, the day before the Moldovan vote, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers approved the National Programme for Adapting Ukrainian Legislation to European Union law, the EU acquis. The programme contains about 1,850 tasks, which involve implementing more than 1,600 acts of EU law.

The two decisions, taken a day apart, show Kyiv and Chisinau each taking formal steps on their own paths in this period.
