When Vilnius told residents to take shelter

Summary

A look back at the drone alert in Lithuania's capital and the regional events around it in the days before.

What happened on 20 May 2026, when Lithuania ordered the general population of its capital to take shelter? Lithuania issued an air raid alert in Vilnius after the military detected a drone signal near the Belarusian border. It was the first time since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that an EU and NATO member state had told its general population to take shelter.

A run of airspace incidents

The alert followed another incident in the region a day earlier. On 19 May 2026, Estonia reported that a Romanian NATO F-16 fighter jet had shot down a drone over Estonian territory. The drone was suspected to be of Ukrainian origin and to have been affected by Russian electronic warfare mechanisms.

Both cases were listed among violations of non-combatant airspace during the Russo-Ukrainian war.

The Belarusian backdrop

On 18 May 2026, the Belarusian defence ministry announced that its military had begun joint training exercises with Russia on nuclear weapons combat. Lithuania's alert came two days later, and the drone signal that triggered it was detected near the Belarusian border.

Separate development in Kyiv

Also on 18 May 2026, a law entered into force in Ukraine that simplifies the legalisation of foreign personnel serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard.
