Kyiv Pride prepares three-day street program as organizers balance visibility and security

Summary

Organizers will spread KyivPride’s September 17–19 marches across three days, citing pandemic concerns while preparing for security risks and police presence.

KYIV — KyivPride organizers are preparing a three-day sequence of public marches beginning September 17 and ending with the principal Equality March on September 19.

The first two days are expected to feature smaller processions. Sunday's demonstration is planned as the largest gathering of the weekend.

Organizers say the unusual structure is partly a response to the coronavirus pandemic. Rather than bringing the entire expected crowd into central Kyiv at once, they want participation distributed across several days.

The arrangement also raises security questions.

Pride events in Kyiv have historically attracted opponents, and organizers expect police to maintain a substantial presence throughout the weekend.

Some LGBT+ activists remain skeptical about relying entirely on state protection. They argue that public institutions have not always been perceived as equally protective of marginalized communities.

There is also concern among some activists that individual officers may hold negative views toward LGBT+ people themselves. From that perspective, simply increasing the number of police does not necessarily answer the question of whether participants feel safe approaching officers during a confrontation.

The organizers nevertheless encourage participants to report threats and follow instructions from security personnel.

The September program is part of a broader Pride season that includes cultural and educational activities.

The largest public demonstration is scheduled for September 19.
