What did Kyiv's 9 January 2022 rally say?

Summary

A look back at a Kyiv demonstration against Russian pressure, set beside two other reports from the days before it.

What was happening in and around Kyiv on 9 January 2022? On that day, an action called "Say No to Putin" ("Скажи Путіну Ні") took place on Mykhailivska Square in the Ukrainian capital.

The rally came at the end of a week with other unsettling news. On 7 January 2022, Andriy Kulykov, a journalist and co-founder of Hromadske Radio, was attacked on Peremohy Avenue in Kyiv. The incident was not linked to his professional work, as reported at the time.

That same day, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that Russian troops deployed to Kazakhstan, during the 2022 Kazakh protests, had kept control of Almaty International Airport. It also said they had secured key government buildings in Nur-Sultan, including the Ak Orda Presidential Palace.

The three reports are separate events. Taken together, they show how the days around 9 January 2022 looked from Kyiv: a public demonstration in the city's centre, an attack on a well-known journalist that was not tied to his reporting, and a Russian military deployment in Kazakhstan.
