Two border and pitch stories from Europe in September 2021

Summary
A look back at Poland's accusation over the Belarus frontier and FIFA's sanction on Hungary, reported in the days before 22 September 2021.
What was pressing on Europe's eastern edge and in its football stadiums on 22 September 2021? Two stories, reported on 20 and 21 September, framed the moment.
On 20 September, Poland accused Russia and Belarus of orchestrating a wave of illegal immigration. The accusation came after four people were found dead at the Polish–Belarusian border the previous day. It was part of what became known as the 2021 Belarus–European Union border crisis.
Football's response to racism
On 21 September, FIFA sanctioned the Hungarian Football Federation with a fine of US$216,000. It also ordered the Hungarian national team to play their next two World Cup qualification home matches behind closed doors. The penalty followed racist behaviour among Hungarian fans during a match against England on 2 September, in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
Two separate stories
The two stories were unrelated. One concerned the deaths of migrants and a dispute over who bore responsibility for the flow of people towards Poland. The other concerned discipline in international football. Both showed European institutions and governments responding to pressure on borders and in public spaces.
