What two August 2021 incidents showed about security

Summary

A look back at a grenade arrest in Kyiv and a prison killing in the self-proclaimed Donetsk republic, reported in the first week of August 2021.

What was happening in and around Ukraine on 9 August 2021? Two incidents from the preceding days framed the news.

On 4 August 2021, police in Kyiv arrested a man who had entered the building of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers with a grenade and threatened to detonate it. He was detained.

Two days later, on 6 August 2021, three prisoners were killed in circumstances that remained unclear in a prison run by the so-called DNR. Among them was Yevhen Sotnikov, a Ukrainian judoka and honoured master of sport, who had been convicted of murder. He was a medallist at world and European championships and had competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The two cases are unrelated, and nothing in the reports links them. Taken together, they show two different kinds of risk: a threat made inside a central government building in the capital, and violence behind bars in territory outside Kyiv's control, where the circumstances of the deaths were not explained.
