Two political stories from 14 January 2022

Summary

A lawsuit by a former president and a joint declaration with Azerbaijan marked the day in Ukrainian politics.

What did Ukrainian politics look like on 14 January 2022? Two items stood out: a fresh court filing by a former head of state and a diplomatic document signed with a neighbour of the wider region.

Viktor Yanukovych, the former president of Ukraine, filed another lawsuit against the Verkhovna Rada with the District Administrative Court of Kyiv. It was described as a further suit, added to his earlier claims against parliament.

On the same day, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a joint declaration with Azerbaijan's president, Ilham Aliyev. As reported at the time, the declaration set out the shared position of the two countries on a range of issues.

The two stories were unconnected. One played out in a Kyiv courtroom, the other at the level of presidential diplomacy. Together they show the two tracks of Ukrainian politics on that date: legal disputes over the legacy of the past and the formal alignment of positions with a partner state.
