Did Kyiv's Crimea Platform summit change the agenda?

Summary

A look back at the diplomatic gathering in the Ukrainian capital on 23 August 2021, and the visits that preceded it.

What did Kyiv gain from hosting leaders and representatives of 46 countries on 23 August 2021? The occasion was the first International Crimea Platform summit, held in the Ukrainian capital, and its participants signed a joint declaration.

The summit capped a busy diplomatic weekend. On 21 August, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew arrived in Kyiv for a three-day visit, which included a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. On the same day, the Presidential distinction "National Legend of Ukraine" was awarded for the first time.

On 22 August, German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Kyiv and met President Zelensky. Her visit came on the eve of the summit, so the Ukrainian capital hosted a succession of high-level guests in the space of three days.

A turnout worth noting

The number of participating countries, 46, was the clearest measure of the summit's reach. A first-ever event of this kind could have drawn a far thinner list; instead, leaders and representatives from dozens of states took part and put their names to a shared declaration. For Kyiv, the gathering was an occasion to present itself as host of an international format built around a single issue.

Other news that day

Elsewhere on 23 August 2021, changes to legislation on electronic passports came into force in Ukraine. In the region, Poland announced that it would build a wall on its border with Belarus to stop the flow of migrants entering the country through Belarus, part of the border crisis between Belarus and the European Union.

Taken together, the day showed two sides of the neighbourhood: a Ukrainian capital gathering partners for a declaration, and a Polish-Belarusian frontier where a government was turning to a physical barrier.
