Lithuania ends its border emergency with Belarus

Summary
A look back at a 5 January 2022 decision on the Belarus frontier, alongside two items from Ukraine's cultural and scientific life.
What did Lithuania decide about its border with Belarus on 5 January 2022? The Lithuanian government announced that it would not extend the state of emergency in place at the frontier. The announcement came during the border crisis between Belarus and the European Union in 2021, which had also shaped relations between Minsk and Vilnius.
The decision meant the emergency regime on the Lithuanian side of the border was not prolonged.
Two items from Ukraine
The same day brought news from Ukraine's cultural sphere. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty awarded its Václav Havel journalism fellowship to Kateryna Lykhohliad.
A day earlier, on 4 January 2022, archaeologists in the Lviv region reported results from exploratory excavations at a newly discovered site linked to Germanic tribes. The work uncovered two new unique archaeological objects dating from the Roman Empire period.
The items were unrelated to one another, but together they marked the first working days of 2022 in the region: a border policy decision in Vilnius, a journalism award for a Ukrainian reporter, and fresh finds in western Ukraine.
