Three Ukrainian incidents on 28 January 2022

Summary
A retrospective on a day of criminal cases and fallout from a shooting in Dnipro, set out from reports at the time.
What did Ukrainians wake up to on 28 January 2022? Mostly the aftermath of violence and accidents at home, with three separate reports drawing attention.
The heaviest followed the events of 27 January 2022 in Dnipro. On the grounds of the Pivdenmash machine-building plant, a National Guard serviceman shot at a guard detail of soldiers. Five people were killed and five were wounded. The commander of the National Guard, Mykola Balan, submitted his resignation.
On 28 January 2022, a gas explosion hit an apartment in a four-storey building in Zaporizhzhia. One person died and two were injured. Seven apartments were damaged, and a criminal case was opened.
The same day, in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district, the boxer Volodymyr Virchis was found hanged. A criminal case was opened in that matter too.
What the reports show
The three reports are unrelated in cause and place: a shooting at a military-linked site, a domestic gas blast and a death under investigation. What they share is the procedural response. Two of the three produced criminal cases on 28 January 2022, and the Dnipro shooting led to a resignation at the top of the force involved.
No further findings on any of the three were reported in the material from that day, and the investigations were still at their opening stage.
