Armenia turns to OSCE Minsk Group for talks

Summary

A look back at 14 March 2022, when Yerevan sought mediation with Baku, and at the report of a mayor's abduction in Ukraine a day earlier.

What was Yerevan seeking on 14 March 2022? Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan asked the OSCE Minsk Group to help initiate peace talks with Azerbaijan, in an effort to normalise relations following the conflict between the two countries.

The request came against the backdrop of the 2021–2022 Armenia–Azerbaijan border crisis, part of the wider Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Mirzoyan's appeal put the Minsk Group, the OSCE format associated with that dispute, at the centre of Armenia's push for negotiations.

Events in Ukraine on 13 March

The day before, 13 March 2022, was the 18th day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russian forces had abducted Yevhen Matveyev, the mayor of Dniprorudne.

The two developments, in the South Caucasus and in Ukraine, were reported within a day of each other, as the region's diplomatic and security agendas continued to unfold side by side.
