What Ukraine's news looked like on 2 February 2022

Summary

A look back at the reports from Ukraine in the days around 2 February 2022, from searches at Metinvest to a shooting in Dnipro.

What was Ukraine reading about on 2 February 2022? The reports from the preceding days were mostly domestic: a criminal investigation, a deadly shooting at a military site and two separate deaths that prompted police cases.

On 1 February 2022, an investigative and operational team carried out searches at enterprises belonging to Metinvest, according to reports at the time.

The shooting in Dnipro

The most serious event of the week came on 27 January 2022 in Dnipro. On the grounds of the Pivdenmash machine-building plant, a National Guard serviceman shot a guard detail of fellow servicemen. Five people were killed and five wounded. The commander of the National Guard, Mykola Balan, submitted his resignation.

Two deaths, two criminal cases

On 28 January 2022, a gas explosion struck a flat in a four-storey building in Zaporizhzhia. One person died and two were injured, and seven flats were damaged. A criminal case was opened.

The same day, the boxer Volodymyr Virchys was found hanged in the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv. A criminal case was opened in that matter too.

Taken together, these reports show the run of domestic news immediately before 2 February 2022: investigators at a major industrial group, a fatal shooting that led to a resignation, and two deaths that police were examining.
