What did 30 March 2022 show about Ukraine's borders?

Summary

A look back at two reports from the days before 30 March 2022: strikes on oil facilities in western Ukraine and a Polish court ruling on the Belarus border.

What was the picture along Ukraine's western edge on 30 March 2022? Two reports from the preceding days point in different directions: one on a military strike, the other on a legal ruling.

On 28 March 2022, a Russian missile attack hit an oil depot in the Rivne region, according to the head of the regional military administration. It was the second attack on an oil facility in the region and the latest in a series of similar strikes over the preceding days. The reports describe a pattern of attacks on fuel infrastructure, but they do not say what motivated it.

On 29 March 2022, a regional court in the border town of Hajnówka ruled that pushbacks of migrants on the Belarus–Poland border had violated Polish law. The ruling came amid the border crisis between Belarus and the European Union that ran through 2021 and 2022.

Two separate stories

The reports do not link the two events, and nothing in them suggests a connection. Taken together, they show that, as of 30 March 2022, the western side of the region was dealing with both missile strikes on energy-related sites and a legal dispute over how a neighbouring border was policed.
