Mariupol corridor announced for 1 April 2022

Summary

A look back at two reports from the final days of March 2022, one on a Mariupol humanitarian corridor and one on a Polish court ruling on Belarus border pushbacks.

What did Russia say it would do for Mariupol on 31 March 2022? Russia's Ministry of Defence announced that its forces would open a humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia again on the following day, 1 April. It said the step came at the request of the leaders of France and Germany.

The announcement concerned a route from the besieged city to Zaporizhzhia. The ministry's statement framed the reopening as a response to the French and German leaders' appeal.

A court ruling on the Belarus–Poland border

Two days earlier, on 29 March 2022, a regional court in the Polish border town of Hajnówka ruled on the treatment of migrants on the Belarus–Poland frontier. It found that pushbacks against migrants there had violated Polish law. The ruling came amid the border crisis between Belarus and the European Union, which had run through 2021 and into 2022.
