What happened in Ukraine on 3 May 2022?

Summary
A retrospective on a day of shelling in Donetsk Oblast, evacuations from Azovstal and a Putin message to Macron on talks.
What did 3 May 2022 bring in Russia's invasion of Ukraine? Shelling in the east killed civilians, a limited evacuation from Mariupol's besieged steel plant was reported, and the Russian president spoke of continuing peace negotiations.
Deaths in Donetsk Oblast
Ten people were killed when projectiles hit a coking plant in Avdiivka, in Donetsk Oblast. Separately, the governor of Donetsk Oblast, Pavlo Kyrylenko, said nine people had been killed by Russian shelling in the region.
Azovstal evacuations
The United Nations said that 127 people had been evacuated from the besieged Azovstal plant and nearby areas. The figure followed a difficult previous day. On 2 May 2022, civilian evacuations from the steel mill, expected to resume at 8 a.m. local time, did not take place. Russia began a non-stop barrage of airstrikes and bombings after Red Cross personnel had left, having departed the previous day when the evacuations were suspended. Also on 2 May, five Russian troops were allegedly killed during a supposed incursion into the plant.
Talks and diplomacy
On 3 May 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin told French President Emmanuel Macron that Russia was ready to continue peace negotiations with Ukraine. The message came amid fears that talks between the two countries had stalled.
The days before
The preceding days showed fighting well beyond the Donbas. On 2 May 2022, a Russian missile hit a dormitory in Odesa, killing a 14-year-old boy and wounding a 17-year-old girl, according to Ukrainian officials; an Orthodox church was also damaged. The same day, a Ukrainian Air Force Bayraktar TB2 drone destroyed two Russian Raptor-class patrol boats near Snake Island in the Black Sea.
Explosions were reported in the Russian city of Belgorod on 2 May 2022. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said there were no casualties or damage.
On 1 May 2022, Russian artillery fire near Izium in Kharkiv Oblast killed three people and wounded eight, according to the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Synehubov. Russian forces were trying to advance towards the settlements of Udy, Prudianka and Staryi Saltiv. May Day anti-war rallies were held across the world that day to call for peace in Ukraine.
Also on 2 May 2022, Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, accused Hungary of having advance knowledge of the Russian invasion. He said Putin had warned Hungary and that Hungary had plans to annex parts of Western Ukraine.
