What did the $40 billion Ukraine aid law contain?

Summary

A look back at the US aid package that was passed by the Senate and signed into law in the days before 24 May 2022.

What had Washington committed to Ukraine by 24 May 2022? A $40 billion package of military and economic aid, which had cleared its final hurdles in the preceding days.

On 19 May 2022, the United States Senate voted 86–11 to pass the legislation, sending it to President Joe Biden for his signature. He signed it into law on 21 May 2022.

The law provides military and economic aid for Ukraine. It also replenishes stocks of US equipment sent to Ukraine, funds European Command operations and addresses the global food crisis.

The Senate margin showed wide support for the package in the chamber, with 86 senators in favour and 11 against. Only two days separated the vote from the signing.
