What did the $40 billion Ukraine aid law contain?

Summary

A look back at the US aid package that cleared the Senate on 19 May 2022 and was signed two days later.

What did the United States commit to Ukraine in the days before 24 May 2022? By that date, Washington had completed a large aid measure: a $40 billion package for Ukraine, passed and signed into law within three days.

On 19 May 2022, the US Senate voted 86–11 to pass the package, sending the legislation to President Joe Biden for his signature. On 21 May 2022, Biden signed it into law.

What the law covered

The law provides military and economic aid for Ukraine. It also replenishes stocks of US equipment that had been sent to Ukraine and funds operations of European Command. In addition, it addresses the global food crisis.

The lopsided Senate vote and the quick signature meant the package was in force as of 24 May 2022, covering both direct support for Ukraine and wider costs tied to the war.
