Voznesensk shelling and the Zaporizhzhia poisoning claim

Summary

A look back at two southern Ukraine reports from 20 August 2022, days before 22 August 2022.

What did two reports from southern Ukraine show about the war as of 22 August 2022? Both dated from 20 August and concerned civilians and soldiers in the south.

In Voznesensk, Mykolaiv Oblast, Russian shelling hit a residential building. Regional governor Vitaliy Kim said nine civilians were injured, four of them children. The report was listed under war crimes in the invasion, and it showed how the fighting reached homes away from the front line.

The second report came from the Russian side. Russia said a number of its soldiers in Zaporizhzhia had been poisoned by Ukraine, and that tests showed Botulinum toxin type B in their bodies. This was a Russian claim, made as the Southern Ukraine campaign continued.

The two reports pointed in different directions. One was an account from a Ukrainian regional governor of injuries to civilians, including children. The other was an accusation from Russia against Ukraine. Taken together, they showed that by late August 2022 the southern campaign was being fought through shelling of residential areas and through competing public claims.
