What did 15 October 2022 reveal about the war?

Summary

A look back at a day of violence at a Russian training ground, set beside two earlier developments in Kherson and Mykolaiv.

What did the war look like on 15 October 2022? On that day, at least 11 people were killed and 15 others injured when two shooters opened fire on a group of volunteers at a Russian military training ground in Soloti, in Belgorod Oblast, near the border with Ukraine.

Two events from the days just before sat alongside it.

Kherson

On 13 October 2022, Russia announced that it would evacuate civilians from Kherson to "other regions of the country". The announcement followed an appeal from Volodymyr Saldo, leader of the Kherson Military-Civilian Administration. It came during the Ukrainian southern counteroffensive.

Mykolaiv

Also on 13 October 2022, Russian forces launched eight missiles at Mykolaiv and hit a five-storey residential building. One of the victims was an 11-year-old boy. He was rescued with broken legs after spending hours under the rubble, but later died in hospital of heart failure.

A wider picture

Taken together, these events show a war reaching in several directions at once: a civilian block in Mykolaiv struck by missiles, an evacuation announced for Kherson, and a shooting at a training ground on Russian soil that left at least 11 dead.
