Shelling across Luhansk and Donetsk on 8 July 2022

Summary

A look back at the security picture in eastern Ukraine and beyond in the days around 8 July 2022.

What was happening on the eastern front on 8 July 2022? Serhiy Haidai, Governor of Luhansk Oblast, said Russian shelling was continuing across the oblast and that the 8,000 residents of Sievierodonetsk were on the verge of a "humanitarian catastrophe".

The warning followed a run of reports from the preceding days. On 7 July 2022, Russian forces launched airstrikes on the city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk Oblast, and the city's mayor reported casualties.

On 6 July 2022, Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko reported that heavy Russian shelling in Donetsk Oblast had killed at least twelve civilians and injured 25 others.

Snake Island claims disputed

The two sides also gave conflicting accounts of Snake Island. On 7 July 2022, Russia said it had fired missiles at the island, killing an unspecified number of Ukrainian troops. Ukraine denied that any casualties had occurred.

Latvia weighs conscription

The war was also shaping defence planning among Ukraine's neighbours in the region. On 6 July 2022, Latvia said it planned to reintroduce conscription, which had been abolished in 2006, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The final decision rested with the country's parliament, the Saeima.
