Putin widens fast-track citizenship offer to all Ukrainians

Summary

A look back at a decree signed on 11 July 2022 and at diplomatic dismissals ordered two days earlier in Kyiv.

What did Moscow change for Ukrainians on 11 July 2022? Russian president Vladimir Putin signed a decree extending a fast-track process for obtaining Russian citizenship to all Ukrainians.

Before the decree, the simplified procedure had applied only to people living in the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. The decree removed that limit and opened the process to Ukrainians everywhere.

Dismissals in Kyiv

Two days earlier, on 9 July 2022, the Government of Ukraine reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had dismissed Ukraine's ambassadors to Germany, India, the Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary.

The two developments were separate: one a Russian measure on citizenship, the other a set of changes in Ukraine's diplomatic corps.
