Norway raised its military alert over drone sightings

Summary

A look back at 31 October 2022, when Oslo announced a higher alert level, days after Russia ended its mobilisation drive.

What prompted Norway to raise its military alert level? On 31 October 2022, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that the level would go up the following day, 1 November. He said the move was a response to sightings of military drones near offshore oil rigs over the preceding few weeks.

The announcement came as the war in Ukraine continued to shape security decisions across the region.

Moscow ends mobilisation

Three days earlier, on 28 October 2022, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the end of Russia's mobilisation campaign, saying that 300,000 reservists had been reached.

Seoul rejects arms claim

On the same day, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol denied that his country was sending weapons to Ukraine. His comment followed a reference to South Korea made by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a conference on 27 October.

Together, these developments from the final days of October 2022 show security questions reaching beyond the front line, from Norway's offshore installations to diplomatic exchanges between Moscow and Seoul.
