What Izium's mass graves revealed on 15 September 2022

Summary
A look back at the day Ukrainian police reported a mass grave of more than 440 bodies in recaptured Izium, amid a fast-moving counteroffensive.
What did the recapture of Izium uncover? On 15 September 2022, Ukrainian police said a mass grave containing more than 440 bodies had been discovered in the city, which Ukrainian forces had recently retaken.
The finding came during the Kharkiv counteroffensive, which Ukraine's armed forces launched on 6 September 2022. It followed the announcement of a separate counteroffensive in the south, near Kherson, in late August. The eastern push began in early September in Kharkiv Oblast.
Later accounts added detail. Several mass graves were found in woods near Izium, with one site holding at least 440 bodies. The dead were people killed by Russian forces. The Ukrainian government believes that more than 1,000 civilian residents were killed during the battle for Izium and the Russian occupation that followed. That estimate was not part of the police announcement on 15 September.
Other signs of the war's direction
The days before 15 September showed how the fighting was widening. On 13 September 2022, the Ukrainian military said it had shot down an Iranian-made HESA Shahed 136 combat drone operated by Russia near Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast. An inscription on the drone identified it as an "M214 Geran-2", a designation that did not immediately correspond to known Russian weaponry.
On 14 September 2022, Russian forces launched eight cruise missiles at the dam of the Karachunivske reservoir. The strike caused extensive flooding in Kryvyi Rih and raised the water level in the Inhulets River by 2.5 metres.
Why the date matters
Taken together, these reports set out a single picture. Ukrainian troops were regaining territory in the north-east. Russia was striking infrastructure far from the front line. And the retaken ground was giving investigators their first view of what had happened under occupation.
For international readers, the Izium announcement shifted attention from manoeuvre and territory to evidence of killings of civilians. The police report of more than 440 bodies was an early marker of that shift, and the later estimate of over 1,000 civilian deaths in Izium shows how large the question became.
