What were the 25 September 2022 referendums?

Summary
A look back at the votes announced in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine's Donbas, midway through their scheduled run.
What was happening in the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" and "Luhansk People's Republic" on 25 September 2022? It was the third day of referendums on joining Russia, scheduled to run from 23 to 27 September.
The votes had been set only days earlier. On 19 September, the "public chambers" of both self-proclaimed entities appealed to their leaders to hold a referendum on accession to Russia "immediately", as reported at the time.
On 20 September, the "People's Council" of the self-proclaimed "Luhansk People's Republic" scheduled a referendum on the republic joining Russia as a federal subject, for 23–27 September. Soon afterwards, the "People's Council" of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" announced that its own referendum on joining the Russian Federation would take place on the same dates.
By 25 September, then, the votes in both entities were under way and had just over two days left to run. The timetable from the first appeal to the start of voting was a matter of days, from 19 September to 23 September.
