What happened at the Soloti training ground?

Summary

A shooting at a Russian military range in Belgorod Oblast killed at least 11 people, as reports from the preceding days described the evacuation of Kherson civilians and a missile strike on Mykolaiv.

What happened at a Russian military training ground near the Ukrainian border on 15 October 2022? At least 11 people were killed and 15 others injured when two shooters opened fire on a group of volunteers at the Soloti site in Belgorod Oblast.

The attack took place at a facility in a region that borders Ukraine, and the targets were volunteers on the range. The reports from that day gave the casualty figures as at least 11 dead and 15 wounded.

The days before

The shooting came after two other developments on 13 October 2022, both connected to the war in Ukraine's south.

Russia announced that it would evacuate civilians from Kherson to what it called "other regions of the country". The announcement followed an appeal from Volodymyr Saldo, leader of the Kherson Military-Civilian Administration. It was set against the Ukrainian southern counteroffensive.

The same day, Russian forces launched eight missiles at Mykolaiv and hit a five-storey residential building. One of the victims was an 11-year-old boy. He was rescued with broken legs after spending hours under the rubble, but later died in hospital of heart failure.

A snapshot of the period

Taken together, the reports from 13 and 15 October 2022 show a war that was reaching civilians in Mykolaiv and Kherson, while a deadly shooting was reported on Russian soil, at a training ground in Belgorod Oblast.
